What Can You See With A Camera?

April 22nd, 2009

We’ve fielded plenty of questions lately about cameras serving as both surveillance systems and flame detectors.

People in industrial settings recognize that using a camera to view a hazardous area after hearing a fire alarm can provide valuable data and possibly save lives. They also understand the requirement for accurate, rapid fire detection. But can a surveillance camera be trained adequately to perform as a flame detector?

The first priority of any safety system must be life safety. In other words, above all other functions, the system must reliably recognize a hazard.

Using current technology, cameras marketed to perform fire detection (camera flame detectors) struggle to recognize and annunciate fires in challenging industrial environments where flames might be partially obscured by pipes, beams, or posts. In addition, these cameras have difficulty seeing fires in bright sunlight, seeing pale fires fueled by methane and propane, and seeing nearly invisible flames fueled by hydrogen.

The Det-Tronics’ proven surveillance/detection solution employs a flame detector for detection and a separate camera for surveillance. The solution is third-party verified to detect fires and show the area being monitored on a video screen. Options include recording the incident and viewing over an internet connection.
